Why I Created AṢỌ́RA: Honoring the Crown We Carry
Share
Before AṢỌ́RA was a brand, it was a necessity.
My days often began before 4 a.m., preparing to step into operating rooms where precision, discipline, and long hours were simply part of the job. As a surgeon, my focus was always on caring for others. But behind the scenes, I was navigating a quiet challenge of my own — protecting my hair during demanding shifts.
Anyone who has worked long hours in medicine knows the routine. Surgical caps were designed for function, not for textured hair, natural hair, curls, braids, or volume. Disposable caps flatten your hair, create friction, and after hours of wear, you can feel the toll it takes on your hair.
Like many others, I tried layering caps.
I tried adjusting them.
I tried working around them.
But every solution felt like a compromise.
I knew there had to be a better way.
The Moment Everything Started
So in 2016, I decided to solve my own problem.
I pulled out my sewing machine and started sewing my own bonnet caps.
I began with just one. But before long, I found myself making more and more — sometimes sewing until 2 a.m. carefully stitching each piece together. because once I started, I didn’t want to stop.
I searched for bright, beautiful fabrics — often Ankara print fabrics — because I wanted something that brought color and personality into long days. Then I carefully lined the inside with satin to protect my hair from friction and dryness.
I even created my own sewing pattern for the bonnet, shaping it intentionally so it could truly protect the crown and accommodate natural hair, volume, and different hairstyles.
What began as a practical solution slowly turned into something I genuinely enjoyed. Sewing became relaxing, creative, and rewarding — a quiet outlet during an otherwise demanding schedule.
And then something unexpected happened.
Friends began noticing the hats.
Family members started complimenting them.
People would ask where I got them.
And little by little, what started as something I made for myself began evolving into something bigger.
Why Satin and Silk Matter for Hair
One of the most important discoveries along the way was how much fabric choice matters when it comes to hair health.
Traditional cotton materials create friction that can lead to hair breakage, frizz, and moisture loss.
But silk-lined and satin-lined bonnets work differently.
A silk or satin lining creates a smooth protective barrier that helps:
• Reduce hair breakage and friction
• Preserve moisture in natural hair
• Protect curls, braids, and protective styles
• Maintain hairstyles overnight while sleeping
• Support healthier hair over time
For anyone with natural hair, textured hair, braids, curls, or protective styles, a high-quality silk-lined bonnet or satin sleep bonnet can make a remarkable difference.
Once I experienced that difference for myself, I knew others would benefit from it too.
From a Personal Solution to AṢỌ́RA
What started with late nights sewing at my kitchen table slowly turned into something I never originally planned.
More people began asking for the bonnets.
Friends told friends.
Requests grew.
And eventually I realized that what I had created to solve my own problem was something many others needed as well.
That is how AṢỌ́RA was born.
AṢỌ́RA was built on a simple but meaningful belief:
Your crown deserves protection.
Today, every AṢỌ́RA satin-lined bonnet and 100% silk satin-lined sleep cap is designed with that same intention — to protect hair while celebrating the beauty and individuality of the people who wear them.
Because hair care isn’t just about appearance.
It’s about confidence, identity, and honoring the crown you carry every day.
Honor Your Crown
Whether you’re protecting your curls overnight, maintaining a protective style, caring for your hair during long work shifts, or navigating hair changes through life’s transitions, a silk-lined bonnet can be a simple but powerful act of self-care.
What began as a necessity during early mornings before surgery has grown into something much more meaningful.
And it all started with one simple decision:
Solve the problem you understand best.
Thank you for being here.
And thank you for honoring your crown with AṢỌ́RA.
